Let bygones be bygones, says recalled Sen. Ningi

368
Sen. Abdul Ningi, who was just recalled from suspension and represents the Bauchi Central Senatorial District, said at the plenary on Tuesday that he had moved on and urged the Senate leadership to let the past go.
Ningi resumed legislative duties after serving two out of his three-month suspension in response to the alarm he raised.
He said: “I have been a member of this National Assembly for almost two decades, and I look forward to making it my home.”
He thanked his colleagues and the Senate President for the kind words he said on the day of his suspension.
“To me, I said, it is time to move on. I am back in the Senate chamber,” Persecondnews quotes him as saying.
On March 2, 2024, the Senate leadership suspended Ningi after he claimed that they had padded the 2024 budget by N3.7 trillion, Persecondnews recalls.
The senator claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa that President Bola Tinubu was enacting a 2024 budget that was not in line with what the national assembly had discussed and approved.
After concluding that the PDP senator could not substantiate his allegat mmion, the Senate suspended him for three months.
The controversy sparked a media frenzy, putting the National Assembly’s credibility under scrutiny.
The fallout has led to demands for the Senate President’s removal, while others called for an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the allegations and ensure accountability.
