Another gas explosion rocks Lagos, leaving three dead

Another gas explosion in Lagos has killed three people, this time at a vendor’s shop in the Ibeju-Lekki area.

On Tuesday afternoon, a 50-kg liquefied natural gas (LNG) cylinder was said to have exploded in front of a row of shops at Abule Pan on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ibeju Lekki.

Persecondnews recalls that on Feb. 14, 2024 , a massive gas explosion occurred in the Iju Ishaga-Ifako-Ijaiye area, resulting in several people being injured while on Mar. 26, 2024, two people also sustained injuries from a gas explosion at Orile-Iganmu in Lagos.

About eight days ago, nine people including a pregnant woman were injured in a gas explosion in the Ajegunle-Apapa area of the metropolis, among several other incidents.

The gas explosion occurred around 3:34 p.m. on Tuesday, Persecondnews gathered.

A deafening sound heralded the fire that enveloped the area, causing a pandemonium.

The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, said in a statement that the explosion involved an LNG (industrial gas) cylinder of about 50kg assembled at a row of shops.

According to her, three human bodies were recovered from the scene, while another person was injured.

Adeseye said the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services’ Lekki Phase II Fire Station, along with personnel from the Health Environment, military, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, joined forces to combat the inferno.

She said the explosion’s cause may not be unrelated to the gas cylinder’s mishandling.
