With Roma sitted ninth on the Seria A table and one win from their last five games, the club pressed the panic button and sacked manager Jose Mourinho.

In a statement on Tuesday, owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin thanked Mourinho “for the passion and commitment he has shown” but believed that immediate change is needed to turn around the dwindling fortunes of the club.

The statement said: “We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the club, immediate change is necessary.”

Mourinho received a second successive red card in the Lazio loss and afterwards compared himself to Harry Potter, suggesting his profile was “raising expectations” for what Roma could achieve.

That result was followed by a 3-1 league defeat by AC Milan on Sunday, which left Roma five points adrift of fourth-placed Fiorentina and led to his dismissal.

Victory in the 2022 Conference League secured Roma’s first major European title and earned Mourinho huge support among the club’s fanbase.

Mourinho’s contract was due to expire at the end of the current season. This is the sixth time the “special one” will be sacked.

Persecondnews reports that the Portuguese has earned a staggering £80 million in his career just from being sacked after his dismissal by Roma.

The 60-year-old pocketed £26 million from being sacked in his two stints at Chelsea, he was paid £17 million by Real Madrid and nearly £20 million by Manchester United.

An ill-fated 17-month time at Tottenham ended with Chairman Daniel Levy, paying him £15 million, his pay out from Roma would be around £3 million.
