In a timely intervention to avert an imminent shut down of the nation’s economy, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr Mohammed Bello Koko has mediated a peaceful resolution between the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and marginal field operators of the oil and gas industry over non-compliance with stevedoring regulations.

The patriotic move was initiated on Monday, January 8, 2024, during a meeting with the union and marginal field operators, Persecondnews reports.

Addressing the maritime workforce, Bello Koko, expressed commitment to promoting industrial harmony and averting the closure of critical production platforms in the oil, gas, and allied sectors, which are under the purview of maritime workers.

“At this time, the national economy cannot afford a shutdown,” the NPA boss said.

The meeting, which concluded with the ratification of a communiqué acknowledging the concerns of the employees and the subsequent postponement of the intended strike, was attended by Adedapo Segun, Executive Vice-President (Down Stream) for Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, Deputy President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), President of the National Association of Stevedoring Operators (NASO), and Nigerian Pipeline Managing Director.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria had threatened to shut down all oil production and allied platforms due to Stevedores’ failure to remit the 3% MWUN levy, lack of access to work locations, and noncompliance with stevedoring regulations.
