Federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education forcefully enrolled captured in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) by the Buhari administration have been removed from the payment platform with immediate effect.

President Bola Tinubu, who gave the directive on Wednesday, said the staff of public tertiary institutions should exit the payment platform to pave way for their efficient management.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman Tahir disclosed this to State House correspondents shortly after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Tinubu.

Mamman said the President and the Council were concerned about the efficiency of management of the universities, noting that the decision had nothing to do with integrity or options of platforms.

He said the President cannot understand why vice-chancellors should be leaving their duty posts and run to Abuja to get staff enlisted on IPPIS when they get recruited.

According to the Minister, the basic concern is that universities are governed by laws.

“Those laws give them autonomy in certain respects and the IPPIS has sort of eroded that autonomy granted universities in accordance with their Act,” he said.

Shedding more light on the Presidential directive, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Muhammed Idris, described it as a big relief for the tertiary institutions.

“Today, the universities and other tertiary institutions have gotten a very big relief from the integrated payroll and personnel information system,” he said.
