Violence has erupted in Ago Palace Way in Okota area of Lagos following the death of a pregnant woman and the driver of a tricycle rammed into by a vehicle being chased by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Her two children inside the three-wheeler had a narrow escape as they were only injured.

Witnesses said apart from giving the vehicle a hot chase, one of the LASTMA officials at Okota Roundabout was trying to take over the steering of a Toyota Sienna vehicle from the driver while on motion to apprehend for a traffic infraction.

According to him, in the process, the vehicle lost control and rammed into a tricycle on Bayo Oyewale Street in the area.

The pregnant woman was said to be taking her children to school when the accident occurred.

The incident sparked a protest, as an irate mob descended on the LASTMA official but for the timely intervention of a team of policemen he would have been lynched.

Police had to fire tear gas cannisters to disperse the mob, clear the barricade and bonfire mounted on the road by the protesters and whisked the LASTMA official away.
