The Lagos-Lekki Deep Sea Port since the start of operations berthed its largest vessel on Friday, a 300-meter Length Over All (LOA) vessel.
The vessel christened CMA-CGM RABELAIS, with an impressive capacity of 6570 TEUs, started its journey from China and called at the automated Lekki Deep Sea Port.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko, in his response to the latest development, said this is a testament to Nigeria’s drive in delivering cargo with ease and utmost efficiency.
He also reiterated his commitment to consistently revolutionizing the way goods are transported with state-of-the-art machinery in West Africa’s largest seaport and other seaports in Nigeria.
Persecondnews recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had on January 23, 2023, inaugurated the Lekki Deep Seaport located in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
The official commissioning made the port eligible to begin commercial operations of receiving imports and shipping exports out from Nigeria.
The port received the first commercial vessel on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
The NPA boss said:”The fact that this vessel is departing the country on the same day it berthed is a fulfillment of our promise to deliver speedy cargo dwell time through improved efficiencies, and state-of-the-art machinery.
“I am delighted to assure you that we are committed to continuously improving on this milestone”.
Captain Monday Gajere, the Asst. Harbour Master for Lekki Port, said the milestone is proof that Nigeria is on the pathway towards attaining Port Hub Status.
Gajere said: “The thorough navigation risk assessment involving Pilots, Tugs, and Mooring gangs which set the pace for seamless berthing of the large cargo carrier is a demonstration of the Authority’s talent-readiness to maximize the competitive advantages that Lekki Port deep brought and state-of-the-art equipment it offers as Nigeria advances towards attaining port hub status.”
