Cancel polls, conduct fresh presidential elections, Obi urges election tribunal

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for the cancellation of the 2023 presidential election and the conduct of a fresh poll.

This comes as Obi requested the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) to cancel the February 25 polls.

Persecondnews recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Tinubu of the APC as winner of the polls ahead of 17 other contestants.

According to INEC, Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku who polled a total of 6,984,520 votes and Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes.

Persecondnews gathered that Obi and LP filed their petition on Tuesday with INEC, President-elect, Bola Tinubu, Vice- President-elect, Shettima Kashim, and their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) joined as respondents.

The Labour Party flag bearer also asked the tribunal to determine that all the votes recorded for Tinubu in the election are wasted votes, owing to the “non-qualification of the president-elect and Shettima.”

Obi, represented by a team of lawyers led by Mr Livy Ozoukwu (SAN), wants the court to hold that at the time of the presidential election held on 25 February 2023, “Tinubu and Shettima were not qualified to contest the election.”

He equally averred that “the 2nd respondent (Tinubu) having failed to score one-quarter of the votes cast at the Presidential Election in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was not entitled to be declared and returned as the winner of the presidential election held on 25 February 2023.”

The petitioner wants an order of the court for the cancellation of the election and compelling the 1st respondent (INEC) to organize a fresh election at which the 2nd Respondent (Tinubu), 3rd Respondent (Shettima), and 4th Respondent (APC) should not participate.
