U.S. govt to repatriate another $23m Abacha loot to Nigeria

Nigeria will be $23 million richer when the United States Government makes good its promise to return the money being part of the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s loot stashed in several countries.

An agreement to that effect has been reached between the two countries, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Malam Abubakar Malami (SAN) said in on Tuesday in Abuja.

Malami signed the agreement on behalf of the federal government, while the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, signed for his home government.

Persecondnews recalls that In 2006, about $723 million of the Abacha loot was returned to Nigeria from Switzerland, after
$500 million and $458 million were earlier recovered in 2004 and 2005 from same Switzerland.

Also, in 2020, the United Kingdom returned $308 million of the confiscated funds believed to have been diverted by the maximum ruler and military dictator who seized power in 1994.

Speaking shortly before signing the agreement, Malami disclosed that the money which is gotten from Abacha’s loot would be invested in infrastructure development.

He named the projects as the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna road and the second Niger Bridge among others.
