Insecurity: Senate leadership in closed-door meeting with Service Chiefs

764

The Senate leadership has held a closed-door meeting with Service Chief over escalating cases of insecurity across the country.

Persecondnews reports that the meeting might not be unconnected with a review of the current security strategies and devising new solutions in the wake of widespread cases of violent attacks, kidnappings, killings of citizens and security agents as well as destruction of properties by terrorists and bandits.

Speaking at the commencement of the meeting, Senate President Ahmad Lawan noted that the level of insecurity in the country was frightening.

He noted that the security challenges had lingered for too long and that the Senate had hoped that the situation would have been better.

“There is nothing to show that the huge investments in security is yielding any result.

“The current situation is now frightening as there is now nowhere to go and nowhere to hide as the FCT, the seat of Government is now under siege.

“The security concerns has crippled the economy and key sectors, notably Agriculture, describing it as unfortunate,” Lawan said.

While noting that security agencies are doing their best, he said “there is more needs to be done.”

Present at the meeting are the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval staff, Chief of Air Staff, the Director-General of DSS and the representative of the National Security Adviser.

On his part, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, said a lot is being done to improve security, adding that issues of national security must be seen from a collective perspective.

He said the troops are still committed to the cause of defending and protecting the people.

“No one is leaving any stone unturned in addressing the problem.”
