The Nigerian Army says it has court martialled no fewer than 227 soldiers involved in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast for alleged misconducts.

The court martial verdict also recommended four soldiers for dismissal and imprisoned 30 others.

The Theater Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj.-Gen. Christopher Musa disclosed this during the inauguration of a Special Court Martial to try 29 soldiers at the headquarters of the Theatre in Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The court also recommended 25 soldiers for demotion, 20 for pay loss and 17 others for severe reprimand.

It, however, discharged and acquitted 10 soldiers while 14 cases were struck out and 107 were recommended for summary trial.

Musa, who did not give details of the alleged misconducts, said: “What we have done is that they were recommended and forwarded to Army Headquarters.

“The confirming authority for the soldiers rest on the Chief of Army Staff, while the Army Council is the body to ratify the officers before the implementation.”
