A woman believed to be in her 70s, Furera Abubakar, and a teenage boy are to cool their heels behind bars for allegedly plucking the right eye of a 12-year-old Almajiri boy in Kano, Persecondnews reports.

The elderly Furera and the boy, Mustapha Yunus allegedly removed Mustapha Yunus’ eye for rituals.

A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court remanded the defendants in a correctional centre pending trial.

Earlier, Prosecutor Lamido Soron-Dinki told the court on Wednesday that the defendants committed the offences on March 19, at Rimin Hamza Quarters, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

Abubakar and Isah, both residents of Dantsinke Quarters, Kano, are standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

Persecondnews recalls that the Kano State Police Command had on March 29, arrested the defendants for removing the right eyeball of the Almajiri boy for suspected charm purposes.

Spokesman of the state police command, SP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, disclosed in a statement that the victim was found by the roadside without his right eyeball and with blood gushing out.

According to Kiyawa, the teenage suspect confessed to the crime, claiming that it was the elderly woman, who instructed him to bring an eyeball of a human being to prepare “appear and disappear” charm for him.

Hassan was reported to have lured the victim to a nearby bush, tied his hands and forcefully used a sharp knife to pluck his right eyeball.

“As a result, the victim sustained grievous hurt and was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 97 and 229 of the Penal Code, Laws of Kano State.
