NUJ lauds NNPC on proactive measures on adulterated PMS

The national body of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appraised efforts of the Mele Kyari-led NNPC Ltd management to shore up supply of petrol following the withdrawal from circulation the contaminated commodity.

Similarly, the NUJ believed that the measures that have already been taken by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd especially with a presidential inquest on the way, there should be a limit to politicizing such a sensitive economic matter.

Persecondnews had on Tuesday reported that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) confirmed the circulation of adulterated petrol with methanol quantities above the country’s specification.

The withdrawal of the petrol with methanol quantities above Nigeria’s specification from the market had created a supply shortfall resulting in scarcity of the commodity across the country.

“Since the unfortunate development, it is regrettable to observe that there has been some blame game between NNPC and some of its designated importers over the ‘bad fuel’.

“It is important that as responsible corporate organizations, the importers of the contaminated fuel will take full responsibility and seek restitution for the economic mishap.

“What ought to obtain now is for a demand that the probe panel by President Muhammadu Buhari is conclusive, while adequate compensation be paid to all verifiable claims of those whose vehicles may have been affected by the high methanol PMS.

“Also after having appraised efforts by the Mele Kyari-led NNPC management notes with satisfaction measures to shore up supply of recalled contaminated fuel to ensure that Nigerians do not suffer needlessly,” a statement signed by the NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo, and made available to Persecondnews, read.

The union further enjoined NNPC, through the NMDPRA, to monitor filling stations to ensure that those with products dispense them appropriately in order to curb artificial scarcity and undue pump adjustments.
