Tragedy hits Lagos coastal town of Badagry as eight children allegedly suffocate inside abandoned car

Badagry, a coastal town in Lagos State, was enveloped by grief on Sunday as the lifeless bodies of eight children were evacuated from an abandoned car.

Badagry is located on the North bank of Porto Novo Creek, an inland waterway that connects Lagos to the republic of Benin.

The tragic incident occurred at Adelayo Street, Jah-Micheal on the Lagos- Badagry Expressway.

According to sources, the children were said to be playing in the abandoned car with the door glass wound up when they mistakenly locked themselves in.

The grief-stricken residents, who massed at the scene of the disaster, were seen wailing and discussing it.

Commenting on the incident, Lagos Police spokesman, DSP Adekunle Ajisebutu said the eight children were said to have mistakenly locked themselves in an abandoned car while playing.

“Their bodies have been recovered and deposited at the Badagry General Hospital’s morgue for autopsy so as to determine the actual cause of death.”

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu has directed a thorough and speedy investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths and commiserated with the parents of the children.
