Breaking news: Nigeria’s digital currency, eNaira, launch: 200,000 wallets downloaded in 24 hours

Barely 24 hours after Nigeria’s digital currency eNaira was unveiled by the Federal Government, Nigerians have downloaded almost 200,000 wallets.

Persecondnews findings show that Nigerians have demonstrated enthusiasm for the eNaira by checking out Google Play Store and Apple App Store to download the application.

In the first 24 hours after launch, Nigerians consumers and businesses downloaded almost 200,000 wallets broken down as follows:

156,700 consumer wallets

23,650 merchant wallets.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday, October 25 launched the digital currency eNaira, the first of its kind in Africa at the State House in Abuja.

It was scheduled for unveiling on October 1.

Nigeria is one of only a few countries in the world to develop an official digital currency.

The digital currency eNaira was developed by fintech company Bitt, which is also behind the creation of CBDC in some East Caribbean countries.

At the launch, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, disclosed that 500 million eNaira ($1.21 million) had already been minted.
