Max Airline parades 7-aircraft fleet of over 21 years old, two grounded

976

Max Airline Limited, also called Max Airline with hub at the Mallam Aminu International airport, Kano, was founded in 2008.

The airline’s early operations began with two Boeing 747s aircraft for Umrah and Hajj services. In fact, Mecca and Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are the only two international destinations served by Max Air.

The carrier has a callsign name MAXAIR NIGERIA.

The oldest aircraft operated by the airline is 24 years old Boeing 737-3H4(WL) with registration number 5N-BBM. The aircraft named Hajiya Murianatu Bara’u was delivered to the airline in 2017.

Data gathered by Per Second News indicate that no fewer than two other ageing aircraft have been grounded in Kano and Arizona.

A Boeing 747-4B5 with registration number 5N-DBK aged 24.3 years was parked at the Aminu Kano airport recently

On September 7th, 2019,  this particular aircraft a 747-300 series flying as flight NR2092 from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Minna, Niger State, suffered an engine failure on approach to Minna.

The crew continued its landing, with the aircraft going off the runway before coming to a stop.

The aircraft sustained minor damage in the incident but there were no passenger or crew injuries reported.

5N-DBK is listed as a Boeing 747-300. To be more specific, an aircraft data firm in the United States lists it as a 32-year-old Boeing 747-346SR, which is currently listed as ‘stored’ on the database.

As Hajj can often be a high-traffic season for a small portion of the year, it would make sense that the plane was taken out of storage specifically for that Hajj service.

The flight was taking pilgrims home after their journey to Mecca. Approximately 550 people were on board.

Investigation by Per Second News shows that the aircraft served with Korean Air from the beginning of its life up until 10 years ago. Since 2009 the aircraft has been under the ownership of Max Air.

There is conflicting information about the fleet size of this airline as some aircrafts are listed as stored or parked.

When an aircraft is parked or stored, it is safe to say that the plane is no longer in operation and has been placed by the owner, airline or lessor into a manufacturer-approved storage regime to preserve maintenance and asset value.

Another Boeing 747-422 with registration number 5N-ADM named Alhaji Dahiru Bara’u Mangal has been parked at the Marana Pinal Airpark, Arizona, in the U.S. This newspaper is yet to get new fleet data to know if the bird is back flying.

4,Registration Number 5N-MHM Boeing 737-3H4 (WL) delivered in November, 2017 is 24 years old.

5, Registration Number 5N-HMM Boeing 747-4B5, according to Per Second News findings was parked at the airpark in Arizona. The aircraft is 22.6 years old. Max Air has only one 747 active plane as of October 2019.

Max Air also has a more recent fleet for VIP leasing an Embraer EMB-135BJ Legacy with registration number 5N-BXX. The aircraft is 12.3 years old. The carrier also has a Learjet 45 (LJ45) aircraft, a mid-size business jet fleet produced by the Learjet Division of Bombardier Aerospace. The Learjet 45 is a newer aircraft the airline purchased for private leasing and services.

Editor’s Note

An Old Airplane is Not an Unsafe One

The safety of the aircraft is often dependent on the maintenance practices of the operator and their safety culture. Only aircraft that are active with this airline are included in this report, they do not include all outstanding orders as reported by aircraft manufacturers.
