British Prime Minister, International leaders condemn Pro-Trump riots in US Capitol

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Wednesday called for an end to the “disgraceful scenes” in Washington, DC.

“The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power,” Mr Johnson said on Twitter.

Angry supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday to thwart a peaceful transfer of power, forcing legislators to be rushed from the building and interrupting challenges to Joe Biden’s electoral college victory.

One woman shot inside the US Capitol died and a curfew has been introduced across the city.

“Extremely troubled by the violence and horrible events taking place in Washington D.C. American democracy is resilient, deeply rooted and will overcome this crisis, said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Twitter.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on supporters of Mr Trump to “stop trampling on democracy”.

“Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decision of American voters,” Mr Maas tweeted.

“The enemies of democracy will be pleased to see these incredible images from Washington DC. Inflammatory words turn into violent actions.”

German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, who is also Vice Chancellor, condemned the “disturbing images” from Washington.

“This is an unbearable attack on democracy,” he tweeted, adding that Mr Trump had “deeply divided the country”.
