Breaking: WTO DG race: Buhari, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a closed-door meeting in Villa

As the race for the headship of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is closing in, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met with Nigeria’s Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Africa’s candidate for the position of WTO Director-General.

President Buhari had thrown his support behind the  candidature of the former Minister of Finance and Coordinator of the Economy.

He had since the process kicked off expressed his support and that of his administration to her effort to clinch the  post.

Persecondnews recalls that WTO had on October 7, 2020 announced Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee had advanced to the final round in the race for its Director-General, setting the stage for the first woman to lead the 25-year-old organization.

Okonjo-Iweala was accompanied to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geofrey Omyeama, the junior Minister in the ministry, Mr Zubair Dada as well as the Industry, Trade and Investment counterpart, Chief Niyi Adebayo.

Details of the outcome of the meeting have not been made public, but Persecondnews learnt that Okonjo-Iweala’s visit might not be unconnected to the World Trade Organization’s election.

President Buhari has since expressed his support and that of his administration to her effort to clinch the plump post.
