Black Wednesday in Kogi as over 25 people burnt to death in tanker explosion (graphic pictures)

An early morning petrol tanker accident has claimed the lives of at least 20 people including school children being conveyed to school in a bus in Lokoja, Kogi State capital.

Also feared dead are some students of Kogi State Polytechnic, secondary school students, residents and passersby.

The tanker which was coming from Okene and heading towards the northern part of the country had a brake failure at about 8.00a.m., lost control and rammed into oncoming vehicles at Felele area of Lokoja.

Following the crash of the tanker, there was an explosion and fire which consumed humans, vehicles and nearby houses.

In a condolence message, Gov. Yahaya Bello said: “It is very sad to learn of the tragic loss of lives, many vehicles, property and other valuables in the petrol tanker fire.”

He urged the students of the State Polytechnic to remain calm and not take laws into their hands.

“I share in your grieving moment over the death of some of your colleagues.”
