Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has approved only 18 political parties from the 92 parties that were in existence during the 2019 elections.

This is as the commission de-registered 74 political parties for their inability to fulfil the law establishing them, after carrying out a review of their performance after the 2019 general elections.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who announced this on Thursday at a press briefing, listed the 18 political parties which scaled the hurdles to be: Accord Party (AP), Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and All Progressives Congress (APC).

Others includes: All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), National Rescue Movement (NRP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Booth Party (BP), Action People’s Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Further speaking, Prof. Yakubu also disclosed that the Commission has fixed September 19, 2020 for the governorship election in Edo and October 10, 2020 for the Ondo state gubernatorial.
