In veiled reference to the“third term agenda’’ taunts, President Muhammadu Buhari, says come 2023 he will leave office.

“I will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections.

“But I am determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across the region, where several ECOWAS members go to the polls this year,” he said in his New Year letter to Nigerians on January 1.

Eminient lawyer, Mr Femi Falana and some Nigerians have accused Buhari of planning to stay in office beyond 2023, the constitutional end of his second term.

As a strong believer of democratic principles, he promised to spend the rest of his life promoting and sustaining such principles both in Nigeria and across West Africa region.

Persecondnews reports that the letter entitled, “A Letter from the President at New Year’’, was personally signed by him.

On the thrust of his administration’s programmes for the new year, Buhari said fighting corruption, improving the economy and combating insecurity would remain atop of its agenda.

Other areas of focus include improving power supply, building roads/houses for Nigerians, developing agriculture, diversifying the economy, creating jobs, combating terrorism and promoting democracy.

He said in 2020 and beyond, 47 roads and bridges would be completed in 2020/21 including roads leading to ports.
