Nigeria’s Flamingos booked their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup semi-final place after edging Venezuela 1-0 in a tense Sunday quarter-final, reports totorinews.com.
Azeezat Oduntan’s composure proved decisive as the game edged towards a stalemate.
Oduntan stepped up in the 89th minute to convert a penalty, breaking Venezuela’s resistance and sparking wild celebrations in the Nigerian camp.
Her cool finish from the spot delivered a hard-fought victory that keeps the Flamingos’ title dream alive.
The win moves Nigeria a step closer to lifting the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup trophy and surpassing their previous best — the bronze medal won at the 2022 edition hosted by India.
The young Nigerians now face Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final, aiming to reach the final and improve on that podium finish from four years ago.
They will look to maintain momentum against the South American side as they chase a historic triumph at the tournament.
