President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners to fill vacancies at the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The nominations follow vacancies created by expiring tenures, while the Senate is expected to scrutinise all the nominees.
In a State House press statement issued on Friday, October 16, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the nominees are Prof. Mustapha Aliu, Bashir Muhammed Umar, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, while Dr Bala Bila has been reappointed as the national commissioner representing the North East.
According to the statement, Prof. Aliu will replace Prof. Abdullahi Zuru as the North West national commissioner, while Umar will succeed Prof. Muhammad Adamu as the North Central representative.
Mrs Babalola, the resident electoral commissioner in Osun State, has been recommended as the new national commissioner representing the South West. She will replace Prof. Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.
For the resident electoral commissioner positions, retired permanent secretary Dr. Akinleye is to represent Ekiti State, while Sanusi, from Jigawa State, will replace Prof. Saidu Ahmed Babura.
Tinubu urged the Senate to accelerate the confirmation process in view of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January 2027.
