Dr Abdullahi Mustapha has stormed to victory as Nigeria Basketball Federation president, crushing rivals in Thursday’s Abuja election and signalling a fresh era for the sport’s leadership.
Mustapha vowed the triumph serves grassroots growth, stating, “This victory is for the development of grassroots basketball, my childhood experience shaped my mandate. No child should lack the basic basketball kits.”
He further pledged: “Nigeria has the talent to excel. We will strengthen community basketball to create a pathway from grassroots to global talent,” while committing to invest in the federation’s technical department.
Mustapha secured 48 votes to defeat former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, who managed eight votes as former international Ejike Ugboaja failed to attract any electoral support.
The result ends Musa Kida’s tenure at the helm. Ugo Udezue emerged vice-president unopposed after standing as the only candidate.
