To bridge the gap between legal education and industry practice, the Law Students’ Society of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, hosted a public lecture and debate competition.

The event focused on driving policy-driven discussions around Nigeria’s mining sector and its potential to foster sustainable national development.

Speaking at the event, law scholar Prof. Pascal Ogunno stressed the need for deeper intellectual engagement with the sector.

He urged the students to take their training seriously and uphold the core values of the profession, noting that legal minds are uniquely equipped to drive growth across key industries, including mining.

Echoing these sentiments, the Deputy Dean of Law—representing Dean Professor Dalhat Idris—praised the organizers for a timely and well-structured programme.

He reiterated the university’s dedication to advancing quality legal education and preparing graduates for impactful public service.

In his keynote address, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Omar, Managing Director of Steron Group and the event’s sole honoree, noted that while Nigeria is not yet recognized as a global mining power, stakeholders must push forward with actionable strategies to elevate the country’s standing in the international minerals market.

Under his leadership, Steron Group has played a leading role in driving investment, innovation, and value-chain development within Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, with a strong emphasis on linking host communities to the economic benefits of responsible mining.

He praised the Law Students’ Society for organizing the lecture and for choosing to recognize his contributions to the mining industry and to national development more broadly.

In his welcome address, the President of the Law Students’ Society, Jamilu Bulama Amshi, explained that the lecture and debate were conceived both to bridge the academia-industry divide and to pay tribute to Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Omar, mni, for his notable contributions to national progress.
