As part of efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and address growing security, governance and economic challenges across West Africa, Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday to represent President Bola Tinubu at the ongoing 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The summit, hosted by Sierra-Leone, marks the climax of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Meetings and has brought together Heads of State and Government to deliberate on key policy decisions expected to shape the future of the sub-region.

Top on the agenda are regional security, democratic governance, economic integration and sustainable development, as leaders seek coordinated responses to evolving political and security challenges confronting West Africa.

The leaders are also expected to adopt strategic resolutions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, expanding trade, accelerating infrastructure development and promoting sustainable economic growth across member states.

The summit is also providing an opportunity for member states to reaffirm their collective commitment to democracy, peace, stability and regional integration amid the region’s changing political and security landscape.

In an earlier statement announcing the Vice President’s trip, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, said Shettima would join Heads of State and Government, ministers, senior officials, regional institutions and business leaders at the summit.

The ECOWAS statutory meeting provides a platform for member states to review progress on regional priorities and chart a common course on security, governance, trade, infrastructure and sustainable development.

Resolutions expected from the summit are anticipated to strengthen collaboration among member states and reinforce ECOWAS’ commitment to peace, economic prosperity and regional integration.
