England came from behind to defeat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in Wednesday’s World Cup Round of 32, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to eliminate the Leopards and end their debut knockout campaign.

DR Congo took an early advantage when Brian Cipenga scored in the 7th minute, capitalising on an enterprising start that unsettled one of the tournament favourites.

The Congolese side remained compact and well organised defensively, protecting their lead through a first half in which England struggled to convert sustained pressure into clear chances.

England emerged after the interval with greater urgency and began to dominate possession.

Their breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Kane equalised, restoring parity and shifting the momentum decisively in favour of the Three Lions.

Kane completed his brace four minutes from time with a clinical finish, sealing a 2-1 victory that sent England into the quarterfinals and brought DR Congo’s memorable run to an end.

Despite the defeat, the Congolese team exited the competition with credit.

It marked their first appearance in the World Cup knockout phase, and they demonstrated they could compete with leading football nations over 90 minutes.

England will now face Mexico in the next round.
