Screening has begun for the voluntary repatriation of Nigerians from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic tensions and rising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals.

The exercise is part of the Federal Government’s plan to facilitate the return of more than 1,000 Nigerians affected by the ongoing unrest in parts of the country.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Friday, noted that the screening, which commenced on Thursday, is aimed at identifying Nigerians willing to participate in the evacuation exercise.

Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria said it has secured waivers with host authorities to allow affected Nigerians, including those with immigration-related offences, to return through official repatriation flights.

Persecondnews recalls that Federal Government had condemned the resurgence of anti-foreigner sentiments in South Africa, warning that continued hostility could strain diplomatic relations.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa to establish crisis response units to assist citizens impacted by the unrest.

The Ministry said the directive followed high-level engagements between Nigerian and South African officials over the safety of Nigerians in the country.

Meanwhile, Nigerians in distress have been advised to contact local security agencies and reach out to Nigerian diplomatic missions through emergency support channels.
