Gold Rush at Accra CAA Champ: Amusan and Relay Quartet Dominate for Nigeria

Accra, Ghana’s capital city, came alive with Nigerian brilliance on Day Two of the 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships as Team Nigeria turned the track and field into a podium party, storming to two gold medals while racking up silver and bronze in a commanding show of depth and determination.

World record holder Tobi Amusan set the tone early, powering to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles to deliver Nigeria’s first gold of the championships.

She was joined on the podium by compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo, who produced a gutsy late surge for bronze, giving the country a commanding one-two punch in the event and sending the Nigerian camp into raptures.

The celebrations doubled moments later when the Mixed 4x400m Relay team struck gold in style.

Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and veteran anchor Patience Okon-George combined with seamless baton exchanges to clock a winning time of 3:16.41, holding off strong challenges from Botswana, Kenya and the home favourites Ghana.

National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko hailed the athletes’ fighting spirit, saying: “We are extremely proud of the performances of our athletes so far in Ghana.

“Tobi Amusan’s gold medal and the overall showing of Team Nigeria in just two days reflect the resilience, talent and hard work of our sportsmen and women. We know that there’s more to come and we’re rooting for all of our athletes.”

The medal tally kept growing as Sade Olatoye claimed silver in the women’s Hammer Throw with a solid best throw of 69.60 metres.

In the men’s 100m final, Ezeakor fought hard to secure bronze behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana.

Drama unfolded in the women’s 100m where Rosemary Chukwuma was initially denied gold after crossing the line first, only for officials to rule otherwise – replays later confirmed her lead, yet she was ultimately awarded silver in a decision that left many stunned.
