A New Era of Diplomacy: Tinubu and King Charles Meet for First UK State Visit Since 1989

President Bola Tinubu has commenced a landmark state visit to the United Kingdom—the first by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.

Following their arrival at Stansted Airport on Tuesday, the President and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were formally welcomed at the Fairmont Hotel by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The historic engagement moved to Windsor Castle, where the President inspected a Guard of Honour before a private audience with King Charles III, ahead of a grand state banquet hosted in his honour.

Tinubu’s agenda is expected to cover major Nigerian port renovations funded by Britain, as well as trade, which reached £8.1 billion ($11 billion) in the year to September 2025 — an 11.4% increase year-on-year.

Tinubu is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Nigerian community on Thursday.

Amid the historic pomp of the UK state visit, a departure from diplomatic norms was observed as no meeting with the British opposition has been scheduled.

However, the President’s focus remains divided by a security emergency in Nigeria’s Northeast.

Following a series of devastating suicide bombings on Monday that left 23 dead, Tinubu ordered a major tactical shift, mandating that top security brass move to the front lines in Maiduguri to oversee counter-insurgency efforts.
