“He’s a Game Changer”: Mikel Arteta Hails Premier League’s Youngest Scorer, 16-Year-Old Dowman

"At 16 years and 73 days old, Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, surpassing the previous record held by Everton's James Vaughan (16 years and 270 days) from 2005"

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised teenage sensation Max Dowman as a true game-changer after the 16-year-old helped secure a vital victory over Everton.

The match at the Emirates Stadium appeared headed for a frustrating stalemate until substitutes turned the tide in dramatic fashion late on.

Dowman entered the field in the 75th minute and immediately injected fresh energy into Arsenal’s attack.

His precise cross in the closing stages was poorly handled by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to slot home the opening goal.

Moments later, in stoppage time, Dowman sealed the 2-0 win with a stunning solo effort.

He collected the ball in his own half, dribbled past defenders, and raced clear to tap into an empty net as Pickford remained stranded upfield after pushing forward for a corner.

At 16 years and 73 days old, Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, surpassing the previous record held by Everton’s James Vaughan (16 years and 270 days) from 2005.

Arteta expressed immense pride in the youngster’s composure and impact.

“I think he changed the game. Every time he got the ball, he made things happen. It looked like we were more of a threat. To do that at that age, in this context, with this pressure, it is just not normal,” he said.

The Arsenal boss highlighted Dowman’s fearless approach.

“Yesterday he was training in the last few days and I had a gut feeling that it was a moment for him. Probably because he doesn’t seem to be fazed by the occasion or the moment or the context or the opponent.

“He just plays so naturally. He makes decisions to make things happen and what he delivered was incredible,” Arteta added.

He emphasized the teenager’s ability against top opposition.

“Some of the things that he does, he does it against these defenders that are some of the best in the world. So he can do it against anybody else.

“The doubt is always, ‘Yeah, but he’s 16 and the crowd and the pressure and expectations’, but he doesn’t seem to be fazing him very much and he had an incredible moment to all of us,” Arteta continued.

Arteta revealed his simple instructions to Dowman before the substitution.

“Go and do your thing and win us the game. And the same with Viktor and to (Gabriel) Martinelli.

” I said these are the moments in the season when something special has to happen, and he (Dowman) knows he has the ability, which I have to give him the opportunity and he will deliver,” he explained.

The Spaniard described the occasion as profoundly meaningful for the squad.

“It is big because you put so much passion, effort, hours into this, which is our passion. When you turn around and you see the bench and those eyes just with that happiness, that joy that you’re almost not believing what has just happened.

“It makes all the sense in the world for what we do and the difficult moments that we go through. And the reaction of the bench as well. When I see everybody so willing to and so generally happy about the team winning in the manner that we did it, it’s so special,” Arteta said.

Everton manager David Moyes, who once handed a debut to a teenage Wayne Rooney in 2002, offered measured praise for the young Arsenal star.

“I don’t know an awful lot about the boy to be honest. I know plenty about Wayne. But he (Dowman) looks like a talented boy, for sure,” Moyes commented.

The result strengthened Arsenal’s position at the top of the Premier League table, keeping their title aspirations firmly on track thanks to the emergence of their latest prodigy.
