In a decisive step that ends weeks of speculation following the death of former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo on December 11, 2025, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday, unanimously confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of the state.
Governor Douye Diri had forwarded Akpe’s name to the House of Assembly just hours earlier, tapping his long-serving Chief of Staff for the job.
1.Akpe is a native of Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area — the same LGA that produced his predecessor
2. He was a part-time lecturer at the Redeemed Christian Bible College, University of Ede, Osun State. He is the Pastor-in-Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Bayelsa Province.
3. He was at a time a lecturer at Niger Delta University and holder of multiple professional fellowships.
4. A 5th-degree Black Belt and certified Kukiwon coach in Taekwondo — credentials that underscore both intellectual depth and personal discipline.
5. He earned a B.Sc. in Technical Education (Electrical/Electronics) from the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt (now Rivers State University) in 1991, a Master’s degree in Administration and Planning from the same institution and a Ph.D. in Administration and Planning from the university.
6. Akpe transitioned from academia to public service, with over 20 years in the civil services of Rivers and Bayelsa states, retiring as Assistant Director before fully foraying into politics.
7. He served as Commissioner in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission (2008–2011).
8. Between 2011 and 2019, he was elected into the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, rose to the position of Majority Leader
9. In 2020, Governor Diri appointed him as Commissioner and member of the State Executive Council.
10. He subsequently served as Deputy Chief of Staff (2020–2023), Acting Chief of Staff (2023–February 2024), and full Chief of Staff from March 2024 to date.
