Manchester United took full advantage of a red card given to Tottenham’s captain Cristian Romero, securing a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford that extended their flawless record under interim boss Michael Carrick to four straight wins in the Premier League on Saturday.
Strikes by Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes broke an eight-match drought without a win against Spurs for the Red Devils, solidifying their standing in the league’s upper echelons.
This result brought United within just two points of Aston Villa in third place, while also creating a five-point gap ahead of Liverpool, who sit in sixth.
Securing a spot in the top five should guarantee participation in the upcoming season’s Champions League, thanks to the impressive showings by English teams in continental tournaments.
Tottenham’s aspirations for Champions League qualification via the domestic standings have evaporated long ago, with this latest setback under Thomas Frank dropping them to 14th position.
However, the fallout from Romero’s lack of composure might have broader implications, coming mere days after his public criticism of the club’s leadership on social media.
Frank revealed that the Argentine defender has faced internal disciplinary measures following his labeling of Tottenham’s limited roster as “disgraceful” after the transfer window shut.
Questions about Romero’s ongoing role as team captain have intensified, and he now faces a four-game ban due to this being his second dismissal of the campaign and his sixth since joining Spurs.
The 27-year-old was sent off after 29 minutes for a reckless challenge that caught Casemiro on the ankle, following a self-inflicted error near the Tottenham penalty area.
Mbeumo calmly slotted the ball into the lower corner, marking his third goal across four outings since Carrick assumed control, thanks to a smart set-piece routine featuring Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo that left the Cameroonian unmarked on the periphery of the box.
The hosts controlled the match, though efforts from Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha were disallowed for offside rulings.
It wasn’t until the 81st minute that United sealed the win, with Fernandes demonstrating true leadership by tapping in a cross from Diogo Dalot at the far post, achieving his 200th goal or assist in 314 appearances for the club.
Prior to kickoff, Carrick emphasized that the club should not hasten the appointment of a permanent manager.
Yet, the ex-midfielder, renowned for his distinguished playing days at Old Trafford, is strengthening his own candidacy by guiding United through a remarkable revival following Ruben Amorim’s exit last month.
