The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken a significant step towards impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, by requesting the state Chief Judge to constitute a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the duo.

This move marks a major escalation in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the state’s head and deputy of the executive arm of government.

The resolution was reached during Fridays plenary, marking a significant development in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the state’s top executive officers.

Lawmakers also addressed journalists in Port Harcourt, firmly debunking claims that the impeachment process was motivated by ethnic considerations or political vendetta.

They cited repeated constitutional breaches by the executive arm as the reason for initiating the process.

“The impeachment process is not an ethnic or partisan exercise,” the lawmakers stated, adding that attempts to portray it as such were deliberate efforts to mislead the public and discredit a lawful constitutional procedure.

The Assembly insists that all avenues for dialogue and engagement were explored before resorting to impeachment proceedings.

Persecondnews recalls that Fubara is accused of undermining the powers and independence of the Rivers State House of Assembly, with lawmakers stressing that no public office holder is above the law
