An alleged drunk driver led to a fatal incident in Surulere on Sunday when a passenger jumped to their death from a moving Volkswagen bus (LND 130 XR) before it slammed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, heading toward Ojuelegba.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the crash, stating that preliminary security reports show the driver was under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly shortly before the collision.
“Motorists approaching from the rear were said to have exercised considerable caution in their attempts to avoid a collision with the erratically driven vehicle.
“In the ensuing pandemonium, a male passenger, apparently attempting to escape from the uncontrolled moving vehicle, jumped out of the bus and sustained grievous injuries upon impact with the ground.
“Tragically, the passenger subsequently succumbed to the injuries sustained in the incident. LASTMA personnel conducting routine traffic surveillance and monitoring along the Ojuelegba axis swiftly mobilised to the scene upon sighting the crash,” he said in a statement obtained by PerSecondNews on Sunday.

Responders secured the crash site and cleared the wreckage to maintain traffic flow, while Area C police personnel managed security and emergency workers evacuated the deceased.
LASTMA noted that the fatal crash underscores the deadly risks of drunk driving and poor vehicle maintenance.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged drivers to run routine safety checks on brakes, tyres, and steering systems before hitting the road.
While expressing condolences to the victim’s family, Bakare-Oki assured residents of LASTMA’s focus on prompt rescue operations and called on the public to report road emergencies using the shortcode 3367.
