Popular music executive and entrepreneur Ubi Franklin has made an emotional revelation about one of the darkest periods of his life, disclosing that the collapse of his marriage to actress Lilian Esoro pushed him to the brink of suicide.
Franklin shared the painful experience in a recent video obtained by Per SecondNews on Friday, explaining that despite enjoying a thriving career in the entertainment industry, he was privately battling depression and overwhelming emotional pain after his marriage began to fall apart.
According to him, the repeated setbacks in his relationship left him humiliated and questioning why he had to endure such heartbreak when everything else in his life appeared to be going well.
“I went through some crazy depressing periods. I remember one time I bought a red CL and I drove that car to the Third Mainland Bridge to go and commit suicide,” Franklin said.
He said he had attempted to take his life on several occasions but was repeatedly rescued by his cousin, Omini Stitches, whom he credited with preventing a tragic end.
“The only luck I had was my cousin brother Omini Stitches, who came to save me. Several times I had tried to commit suicide; Omini saved me because I was so embarrassed. I didn’t know what to do. I felt like, what have I done to deserve all of this?” he said.
Franklin explained that at the time he was managing some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars and had a flourishing career, making it even more difficult to understand why his personal life had become so turbulent.
“I have a good career going for myself. I have like the biggest artist in the country at the time. Everything was fine, so I just felt like it was time for me to settle down,” he recalled.
Despite the emotional trauma, Franklin said he has come to accept that the relationship simply was not meant to last and no longer harbours resentment towards his former wife.
“So sometimes I always feel like this relationship did not work; it was just meant to be that way. Till today I can’t really explain exactly what transpired, but we’re now very good friends,” he said.
He noted that both of them have chosen to prioritise their son and now maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship, attending his events together and supporting each other whenever necessary.
“We co-parent very well; we celebrate our son’s events. Any opportunity I ever have to support her, I always do it to the fullest, and I pray that she continues doing well,” Franklin added.
Looking back, the talent manager said the greatest blessing from the failed marriage remains their son, describing him as the positive outcome of an otherwise painful chapter in his life.
“So sometimes, I have always believed that regardless of all the pain, the best result that I got from that was my son,” he stated.
Franklin urged people going through heartbreak or disappointment not to allow bitterness consume them, stressing that painful experiences can become valuable life lessons.
“The lesson I want you to learn from this is, I don’t want you to think that when something happens sometimes with a human being, you have to hate the human being. No, that’s not the case,” he said.
He advised those facing emotional struggles to remain hopeful, explaining that healing often comes with time and a willingness to move forward instead of dwelling on past hurts.
