Tragedy struck Mexico City on Wednesday as two people died during massive street celebrations after the national team recorded its first World Cup knockout victory since 1986 by defeating Ecuador and advancing the co-host nation to the Round of 16.

The result triggered an outpouring of national joy that quickly filled the capital’s streets with revelers.

City government estimates placed the crowd at more than one million people, with the largest gatherings concentrated around the Angel of Independence monument.

According to the city’s health ministry official who spoke to AFP, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man both died of asphyxiation amid the festivities.

The local government confirmed at least two fatalities linked directly to the post-match events.

Local media outlets reported a possible third death, but authorities have not verified or confirmed any additional casualties beyond the two cases officially acknowledged.

The scale of the public response underscored the deep significance of the win for Mexican football, even as officials grappled with the somber toll the celebrations exacted on the day.
