The Federal Road Safety Corps says improved enforcement and coordinated traffic operations during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations helped save hundreds of Nigerians from road crashes and injuries across the country.
The corps disclosed that road accidents recorded during the Sallah special patrol dropped significantly compared with figures from the previous year, while the number of persons affected by crashes also declined.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Joseph Ohaeri, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja, obtained by Persecondnews, on Saturday, described the outcome as one of the strongest operational results recorded by the agency in recent years.
According to him, the number of crashes reduced from 191 cases in 2025 to 142 in 2026, representing a 27 per cent decrease.
“Fewer people were affected by crashes during the period, with the number dropping from 1,364 in 2025 to 1,064 in 2026”.he said.
Ohaeri added that injuries recorded during the operations equally declined, noting that the corps achieved a 25.4 per cent reduction in injured victims within the review period.
“These impressive gains represent hundreds of lives protected and families spared the devastating consequences of road traffic crashes,” he added.
The FRSC spokesman attributed the improvement to aggressive traffic management measures, nationwide public awareness campaigns, stronger enforcement and faster emergency response efforts introduced during the festive movement.
He explained that the corps intensified highway patrols, surveillance activities, rescue operations and stakeholder collaboration across critical routes to ensure safer journeys before, during and after the Sallah celebrations.
“The corps employed these protocols and succeeded in creating safer travel conditions for millions of Nigerians,” he noted.
Ohaeri further quoted the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as praising FRSC personnel, Special Marshals and partner agencies for their dedication and professionalism throughout the nationwide operation.
Mohammed said the outcome showed that effective planning, sustained enforcement and public cooperation could significantly reduce crashes and fatalities on Nigerian roads.
He also appreciated motorists who complied with traffic regulations and followed safety advisories issued during the festive season.
Persecondnews recalls that the FRSC deployed 36,000 personnel, including Regular and Special Marshals, alongside patrol vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks, in collaboration with the NSCDC and other agencies, to strengthen traffic control, emergency response and road safety operations during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations nationwide.
