Host nation Nigeria has delivered a commanding display at the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling Para-Track and Track African Championships, surging to the top of the medal standings with 16 medals after only two days of fierce competition in Abuja on Tuesday.
Persecondnews reports that athletes from powerhouse nations such as Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Algeria have been locked in intense rivalry alongside the hosts at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome.
Nigeria, currently tops the medals chart, has garnered nine golds, five silvers and two bronzes.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our cyclists who have exhibited outstanding speed, endurance, technical brilliance and determination that have truly thrilled the home supporters,” said the spokesperson for the Nigeria Cycling Federation Patrick Omorodion.
The event highlights the excellent facilities at the Abuja velodrome, which have earned widespread acclaim from participants and officials alike.
“This world-class venue provides the perfect platform for African cyclists to compete at the highest level,” noted a senior coach from Kenya.
Nigeria had previously hosted the championships in 2021 and 2023, and this year’s edition attracted more than 100 riders from eight countries battling for medals, national pride and glory.
