Efforts to boost medicine security and local pharmaceutical production have intensified, as the Federal Government deepens collaboration with global partners to expand access to advanced therapies, according to a senior government official.

Daju Kachollom, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, described the engagement as a convergence of science, policy, and opportunity.
The move comes amid ongoing pharmaceutical and research reforms under the Presidential Initiative on Vaccine and Biologicals Production (PVAC), highlighted during a high level engagement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Persecondnews reports that the development underscores government efforts to strengthen local pharmaceutical production and improve access to vaccines and advanced therapies.

Kachollom, represented by the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics,
pointed out that emerging fields such as gene therapy and regenerative medicine are redefining modern healthcare

“Partnerships like this are critical to ensuring that innovation translates into sustainable improvements in our health system,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer of Caring Cross Boro Dropulic said the organisation is working tirelessly to expand access to cellular and gene therapies globally, with a focus on affordability and scalability in low and middle income countries.

He highlighted the growing burden of genetic and blood related diseases in Nigeria, particularly among children, as a strong case for accelerating access to next generation treatments.

Dr. Obi Adigwe,Director-General of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), who also spoke at the event, outlined steps taken to position Nigeria as a leader in pharmaceutical research and development on the continent.

He highlighted key initiatives such as securing international research grants, fostering regional partnerships, and developing the infrastructure necessary for the domestic production of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Adigwe noted that Nigeria is shifting toward a synchronized, multi-sector strategy—uniting government agencies, research institutions, and global stakeholders to accelerate large-scale innovation.

The engagement marks a significant step in Nigeria’s effort to transition from a consumer of advanced medical therapies to an active participant in their development, and adaptation.
