Adejoke Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications and Co-ordination, Aviation Services Limited, operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2), Lagos, has defended the recent parking fee structure at the terminal.

She highlighted that the review was necessitated by the misuse of the facility rather than revenue considerations.

In an interview on Arise News Channel, monitored by Persecondnews on Thursday, Olawuyi explained that MM2, which has been in operation for about 19 years, was originally designed strictly for short stay parking.

She noted that the management had observed increasing cases of abuse of the car park, with vehicles left for extended periods ranging from days to several weeks, and in some cases, months.

“What we discovered over time is a misuse of the facility. The car park was designed for short stay parking, not a garage. We had situations where vehicles were left for one week, three weeks, and even up to six months or a year,” she said.

According to her, the situation had contributed to congestion within the airport environment, including gridlock at drop off zones, thereby affecting smooth access for genuine users.

Olawuyi maintained that the recent tariff review was part of a demand management strategy aimed at restoring the original purpose of the facility.

She further clarified that the management had considered completely eliminating overnight parking but opted for a structured pricing model to balance operational needs and user convenience.

Responding to concerns over the cost implication on passengers and motorists, she said the decision was not intended to punish users or generate additional revenue, but to ensure order and efficiency within the terminal environment.

Olawuyi also disclosed that public notices and phased communication were issued prior to the implementation of the new charges, adding that awareness was created through signage and other channels within the car park.

She emphasized that MM2 remains dedicated to providing a seamless, secure environment for all travelers.

Furthermore, ongoing infrastructure upgrades and future expansion plans are set to further streamline operations and elevate the overall passenger experience at the terminal.
