From National Grid to Grassroots Politics: Adelabu Resigns to Kickstart Oyo Governorship Quest

49

Amid nationwide power crisis, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially resigned from the Federal Executive Council to focus on his 2027 gubernatorial bid in Oyo State.

His departure, formalized in a letter to President Bola Tinubu dated March 26, aligns with the federal mandate requiring all political appointees with electoral ambitions to vacate their positions by the March 31, 2026 deadline.

In his resignation, the former Central Bank Deputy Governor stated that stepping down would allow him to “fully pursue” his aspirations and dedicate the necessary resources to the upcoming race.

Adelabu is a veteran of Oyo politics, having previously contested for the state’s top office in both the 2019 and 2023 election cycles.

His exit signals a broader shift within the Tinubu administration as the 2027 political calendar begins to take shape.

However, his departure leaves a significant vacancy at a pivotal moment for the power sector, which remains under intense public scrutiny due to persistent grid instability and infrastructure deficits.

During his tenure, the ministry pursued reforms aimed at stabilising generation and enhancing distribution, even as outages and grid instability remained key concerns across the country.

Persecondnews reports that Adelabu’s tenure was defined by the introduction of a tiered “Band” system (Bands A–F), which categorized consumers based on their daily electricity supply.

However, his departure coincides with a severe month-long national blackout triggered by a critical gas supply shortage.

This crisis is rooted in an unresolved ₦6 trillion debt owed to gas-producing companies, which has crippled power generation across the country.
