President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Prof. Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance, taking over from Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite.
A communication dispatched by the president to the National Assembly gave the indication on Tuesday.
In a separate request read during the days plenary session Tinubu also pressed the upper legislative chamber to clear former Rivers South-East Senator Magnus Abe for the position of chairman at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio personally read both presidential messages during the chamber’s sitting before referring the petroleum-related nominees to the relevant oversight panel.
Prior to his nomination, Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State, had headed the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, leading sweeping changes designed to revamp the country’s entire tax framework.
The 50-year-old professional combines expertise in economics, accountancy and public policy formulation.
He built a 22-year career at global firm PwC after joining in 2001, eventually advancing to the role of Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.
Abe’s nomination follows the departure of previous chairman Gbenga Komolafe from the petroleum regulatory commission.
Alongside Abe, the president has put forward Paul Yaro Jezhi, who once served as Trade Union Congress chairman in Kaduna State, and Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former Deputy Director of at the now-defunct Department of Petroleum Resources, both for non-executive commissioner slots.
Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Petroleum Upstream to handle further scrutiny of the Abe, Jezhi and Babalola nominations as required by legislative procedure.
