Veteran Nollywood actor Prince Jide Kosoko has been declared Oloja of Lagos-elect, a development that has generated widespread attention across Nigeria’s cultural and traditional landscape.
The declaration was made by members of the King Kosoko Royal Family at the historic King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, where family elders formally presented the actor as their preferred candidate for the revered title.
The Oloja of Lagos title is deeply rooted in the city’s traditional history and is regarded as a key cultural position within the Lagos royal structure.
The office has remained vacant since the death of its last holder, Chief Adebola Ige, in 2017.
Prince Kosoko’s emergence is closely tied to his royal lineage and long-standing cultural influence.
Beyond his ancestry, he is widely respected for his decades of contribution to Yoruba theatre, film, and cultural preservation.
In an interview with Per Second News on Wednesday morning in Lagos, Jide Kosoko confirmed that the process toward his installation has officially begun.
“Yes, the process has indeed commenced,” the veteran actor confirmed, noting that all traditional procedures must be allowed to follow due process.
Sources within the royal family explained that the next phase involves formal approval and capping by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, in line with established tradition.
The announcement has also revived conversations around succession within the Kosoko royal dynasty, as traditional appointments in Lagos often involve multiple stages of consultation and recognition.
Reactions have poured in from the entertainment industry and the wider public, with many describing the development as a symbolic fusion of culture, royalty, and modern influence.
