The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Federal Ministry of Finance, has engaged with stakeholders in Awka on the reconstruction of the Alaoji-Onitsha 330kV transmission line.

Speaking at the interactive session, TCN representatives, including Engr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo and Project Manager Engr. Omobola Sobo, emphasized that the project is a critical component of a national grid upgrade designed to stabilize the regional economy through reliable power.

To facilitate the project, the government has already secured compensation funds for residents whose properties fall within the 138km route spanning Anambra, Abia, and Imo States.

While this is one of the country’s most significant power initiatives, consultant Bassey Uzodinma noted that the impact on local structures has been minimized by reducing the Right of Way.

In Awka, approximately 355 structures—mostly fences and small shops—are slated for compensation.

Last week, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hosted a comprehensive stakeholder engagement session in Anambra State to discuss the upcoming transmission project.

The meeting brought together Anambra State Government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society representatives to ensure a transparent implementation process.

The engagement reached a total of 79 communities along the transmission corridor, including 14 in Anambra as well as several across Abia and Imo States.

During the interactive session, participants explored the project’s scope and benefits while addressing specific local concerns to ensure the project moves forward smoothly and inclusively.
