Gambling Turns Deadly: Students Beat Teacher Fatally in Oyo

Ogbomoso community in Oyo State, is still reeling from a tragic incident at Soun High School where a teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, was fatally assaulted.

The attack occurred after Adegoke attempted to stop students from gambling during school hours.

Witnesses report that the teacher caught several students gambling inside a classroom and proceeded to scold them.

In a swift and violent escalation, the students reportedly pounced on Adegoke, inflicting severe injuries, including broken limbs.

Despite immediate transfer to a medical facility, he died from the sustained injuries.

A joint statement released by a collective of concerned teachers expressed their outrage, branding the deadly assault as both shocking and utterly unacceptable.

“With deep pain, we mourn the death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a committed teacher who lost his life while enforcing discipline. This attack is not just on one person, but on the entire teaching profession,” the statement read.

The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the police to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

They also urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s behaviour.

Stakeholders have blamed the tragedy on declining morals in schools and homes.

The incident has also reignited demands for enhanced teacher protection and the implementation of stricter security measures to ensure educational institutions remain safe environments for learning particularly in the Southwest.

Attempts to reach the Oyo State Police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, for official comment proved unsuccessful.
