Nigeria’s music industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, the founder and leader of the celebrated Shuga Band.

The veteran entertainer reportedly passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga defied the odds after being struck by polio at the tender age of five.

His story became a symbol of resilience and hope, inspiring thousands across the country as he transformed his physical challenge into a testimony of determination and excellence.

In 1998, Akiin Shuga founded the now-famous Shuga Band, which started humbly at Pintos Bar in Ikeja, Lagos.

What began as a small group of passionate musicians would later evolve into one of Nigeria’s most sought-after live bands, performing at top weddings, corporate events, and government functions across the nation.

Known for his infectious energy and creative mastery, Akiin Shuga revolutionized the Nigerian live music scene by infusing professionalism, class, and innovation into his performances.

His ability to blend contemporary sound with traditional rhythm made Shuga Band a household name in the entertainment space.

He was not only a performer but also a visionary entrepreneur.

As the founder and President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), Akiin Shuga worked tirelessly to promote the welfare of live-band musicians, setting new standards for fair contracts, stagecraft, and artist management within the industry.

Akiin Shuga’s passion for education and growth took him beyond Nigeria’s borders.

He studied Music Business at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where he deepened his understanding of performance management, branding, and sound innovation — knowledge he brought back to elevate the Nigerian entertainment landscape.

Beyond music, Akiin Shuga was deeply committed to humanitarian causes.

A proud polio survivor, he founded the Shuga Limb Foundation, which provided empowerment and support for individuals living with physical disabilities.

He also served as a Rotary International District Polio Ambassador, using his platform to advocate for the eradication of polio in Nigeria and beyond.

Friends, fans, and colleagues have continued to pour in tributes, describing him as a man who lived with purpose, humility, and contagious optimism.

Many remember him for his signature smile, his stylish stage presence, and his unwavering belief that music could heal, unite, and transform lives.

His family, while confirming his passing, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and condolences from fans and the entertainment community.

They revealed that funeral and memorial details would be announced at a later date.

Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.

His legacy lives on — not only through his timeless music and humanitarian works but also in the hearts of those he inspired to believe that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, one can still shine brilliantly.
