The Nigerian U17 Women’s team, also known as the Flamingos, has been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after a 4-0 defeat by Italy.

The loss marked the end of Nigeria’s journey in the tournament, which the team had entered with high hopes following their impressive run in the qualifiers.

Despite a determined display, the Flamingos were unable to breach the Italian defense, with Captain Shakirat Moshood coming closest to scoring in the 24th minute.

Her fierce shot from the left side of the penalty box was well saved by Italian goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni, who pushed the ball round the post.

Italy took the lead just before halftime when Anna Copelli scored a clinical goal, dancing past the Nigerian defense and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu.

The Italians continued to dominate the second half, adding three more goals to their tally.

Caterina Venturelli scored a stunning long-range strike in the 55th minute, while Giulia Robino doubled the lead three minutes later.

A fourth goal was awarded to Italy in the 89th minute after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review confirmed that Rachelle Giudici had scored legitimately.

The defeat marks a disappointing end to Nigeria’s campaign in the tournament.

However, the Flamingos must now turn their attention to preparations for the qualifying series for next year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, which will be an annual event.

With the competition becoming more fierce, the team will need to regroup and work harder to ensure they qualify for the next edition.
