The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced
on Sunday that Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won the Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election.

Nwachukwu received 90,408 votes, defeating Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had 19,812 votes, and Donald Amamgbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who had 2,889 votes.

The bye-election was held to fill the vacant seat left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Ubah was first elected in 2019 under the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and was re-elected in 2023.

He later switched to the APC before his death in 2024. Sixteen political parties participated in the election.

INEC also declared Mr. Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, a lawyer from the well-known Ikpeazu family in Onitsha, the winner of the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency bye-election.

Persecondnews reports that Saturday’s bye-election is seen as a preview of what’s to come in the state’s November 8 gubernatorial election.

A former President-General of Ukpor, Nwachukwu will also be the first politician from Nnewi South Local Government Area to occupy the senatorial seat once inaugurated.

In the Onitsha North I State Constituency, Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe, a lawyer, was declared winner of the bye-election.

Announcing the result, INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, said Azikiwe polled 7,774 votes to defeat Mrs. Justina Azuka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who scored 1,909 votes.

Justina is the widow of the lawmaker who represented the constituency before his death.

He was kidnapped on Christmas Eve 2024, and his body was found in the bush near the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.
