The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), Abuja has been Inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s healthcare delivery and to stem medical tourism.
The AMCE, developed through partnerships with Afreximbank and King’s College Hospital, boasts cutting-edge facilities, including West Africa’s first 18 MeV Cyclotron, 3 Tesla MRI, PET/SPECT CT, and 256-slice CT.
Persecondnews reports that the centre features Africa’s largest stem cell laboratory, linear accelerators, cath labs, and AI-powered diagnostics.
The advanced technologies will enable the centre to offer state-of-the-art treatments, including stem cell transplantation and clinical trials.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who performed the opening of the facility on behalf of President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, highlighted the importance of vision and sacrifice in national development.
“Nations do not rise by miracle. They rise by vision and by sacrifice,” he said.
“AMCE Abuja is not just a hospital. It is a firm statement of purpose and a symbol of what happens when Africans decide to build for themselves at scale, with precision, and with purpose,” Shettima added.
AMCE is designed to curb medical tourism, which costs Nigeria and Africa billions of dollars annually by providing advanced healthcare services, the centre aims to promote healthcare self-reliance and reduce the continent’s reliance on foreign medical services.
The centre will also focus on human capital development, creating over 3,000 jobs and establishing a medical and nursing school to train Africa’s future health leaders.
The school will prioritize research, innovation, and clinical excellence, ensuring that the centre remains at the forefront of healthcare delivery.
